Kansas man gets 28 months for fatal hit and run of horse rider

A Wichita man will spend more than two years in prison for his role in a traffic accident that killed a man riding a horse last summer.

George Childers, 26, was sentenced to 28 months Tuesday afternoon in connection with the death of 49-year-old Lloyd “Sonny” Ferguson on July 5, Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said.

Childers was the driver of the first of two cars that struck Ferguson while he and 6-year-old Eddie Caddell were riding Ferguson’s horse across 21st Street North near Piatt. Childers fled, leaving the pair injured in the street.

Ferguson died at the scene. The boy was seriously hurt but recovered. Authorities euthanized the horse following the crash.

Childers pleaded guilty in February to one count of leaving the scene of an injury accident and one count of interference with law enforcement in connection with the crash. He and three others – Elease Childers, Colleen Fisher and Saquaya White – were arrested and charged following a Crime Stoppers tip.

The women were sentenced to probation

for interfering with law enforcement in the case.

Sedgwick County District Court Judge Joe Kisner handed down George Childers’ sentence.
