Prison term is latest setback for would-be burglar shot by victim

A Kansas City man pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree attempted burglary for his role in a failed May 2013 burglary attempt that ended when the resident fired a gun through her back door, wounding the man.

Jackson County Circuit Judge James Dale Youngs sentenced D’Shawn Marchbanks, 22, to two years in prison.

According to court records, a resident of a home in the 10600 block of Greenwood Road in Kansas City saw a man she didn’t recognize ring her doorbell four times. She didn’t answer, and soon noticed two men on her back deck, one of whom tried to open her back door. She could see that one of the men wore blue rubber gloves and was lifting his right leg to kick in her door.

She fired one round from a .38-caliber revolver through the back door. She heard two gunshots but wasn’t injured.

Neighbors saw three men leaving in a car. Less than 30 minutes later, police saw a similar car pull into the emergency area of Research Medical Center. Hospital staff members took a passenger, later identified as Marchbanks, into the hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound in the chest.
