NEA gives $1.2 million to Kansas City area arts groups

The National Endowment for the Arts announced nearly $75 million grants this week, including more than $1.2 million to groups in Missouri and Kansas.

The federal agency blessed projects ranging from the avant-garde to traditional folk art and claimed that for every dollar the federal government invests, arts organizations raise an additional $9.

Among the local grants:

• $1,185,200 to the Mid-America Arts Alliance for “partnership agreement activities” to arts organizations in the region.

• $20,000 to the Kansas City Ballet Association for a showcase by new and emerging choreographers.

• $20,000 to the Lyric Opera of Kansas City to support a summer camp for young people.

• $20,000 to the University of Kansas to showcase new interpretations of Igor Stravinsky's “Rite of Spring.”

• $15,000 to the American Jazz Museum to support the 18th & Vine Jazz and Blues Festival.

• $10,000 to Johnson County Community College for a dance festival of new works.
