Bates County couple plead not guilty in marijuana case

A rural Bates County couple pleaded not guilty Monday, three days after being arrested for growing marijuana in their home.

Bond for Gene Halbin, 60, and Dolores Halbin, 58, is set at $25,000 each.

On March 18, authorities carried 41 marijuana plants, growing lights and several guns out of the couple’s home northwest of Adrian, Mo.

The Halbins say Gene grew the marijuana to treat his glaucoma. Last week, Dolores Halbin testified to a Missouri Senate committee about medical marijuana, which is legal in 20 states.
