KC area guys create parody of Lorde's ‘Royals’ about the Kansas City Royals
With baseball season officially kicking off this week, it had to happen, right?
John Leslie Long, a 19-year-old singer/songwriter from Lee’s Summit, stars in a parody of Lorde’s hit “Royals” about our own Kansas City Royals, opening their season today.
Long, who is studying marketing at Evangel University in Springfield, is also a worship leader at World Revival Church in Kansas City.
A few months ago fellow church member Aaron Lage told him that he had an “awesome idea” and showed Long parody lyrics he had written to the music of the monster hit. “The words went perfectly with the music,” says Long, who recorded the song.

But everybody's like, Cardinals, Red Sox, what about the YankeesMets, Braves, Marlins, Tigers and the PhilliesWe don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair.Long and the buddy who lives across the hall from him at school, Aaron Durkalski, came to town in January and recorded scenes for the video. Durkalski then spent weeks editing the video, which was posted on Sunday.
Local sports media were quick to pounce, hitting up Long and Lage for interviews today.
“It was just a little idea to make a music video, and now we’re here,” says Long, who fielded interview requests on his way to class early Monday.
We think that Lorde, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, will love this parody, as the KC Royals had
the Royals gifted the teen pop star
with her own George Brett jersey.
