Washington will meet with DeSean Jackson

Day two of the DeSean Jackson watch continued Saturday, and his next home remains a mystery.

A person with knowledge of the situation told The Star on Saturday that Jackson has a visit set up with Washington on Monday, which is the first of other unspecified visits that have been scheduled.

Since he was released by the Eagles on Friday amid concerns about his off-field behavior, the 27-year-old Jackson has been linked to several teams in published reports, including the Chiefs, Oakland and Buffalo.

The Raiders, Bills and Washington have more cap space than the Chiefs, who have about $4.5 million, according to the NFL Players Association.

That means if it comes down to a bidding war for Jackson (and given Washington owner Dan Snyder’s free-spending ways, it just might), general manager John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid could be hard-pressed to win it.

For Chiefs fans, losing out on Jackson would be a difficult pill to swallow, especially after the Chiefs also came up empty in their well-chronicled and somewhat controversial pursuit of Emmanuel Sanders.

The Chiefs have consistently stressed the need to build through the draft, so even if they strike out on Jackson, they still have some options at receiver. Here are a few that remain in the draft.

Marqise Lee

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah both have the talented playmaker from Southern California falling to the Chiefs in their latest mock drafts. This scenario seemed unlikely only a few months ago, given his off-the-charts collegiate production.

Lee, who stands 6 feet tall and weighs 192 pounds, posted his best season in 2012, when he caught a team-high 118 passes for 1,721 yards and 14 touchdowns and won the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s best receiver.

Due to injuries, however, Lee’s numbers fell off sharply in 2013, when he only caught 57 passes for 791 yards and four touchdowns, all of which were career lows. Those durability concerns, plus a solid-but-unspectacular performance at the Combine, where he ran a 4.52 40-yard dash, could push him out of the top of the first round.

Odell Beckham, Jr.

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay has Beckham falling to the Chiefs in his latest mock draft, as does NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks and Mike Hugenin. If they are correct, the Chiefs would be getting a proven playmaker who also contributes on special teams.

In 2013, Beckham set LSU’s single-season leader for all-purpose yardage with 2,315, when he caught 59 passes for 1,152 yards and eight touchdowns and returned 18 punts for 160 yards and 32 kicks for 845 yards.

Beckham’s stock has risen since a strong performance at the Combine, where he measured in at 5 feet 11 and 198 pounds and ran a 4.43 40-yard dash. Beckham also displayed burst and flexibility by running the 20-yard shuttle in 3.94 seconds and 60-yard shuttle in 10.93 seconds, which were among the top times at his position.

Kelvin Benjamin

NFL.com’s Charles Davis has the massive redshirt sophomore falling to the Chiefs in his latest mock draft. If so, they would be gambling on a raw but gifted prospect.

Benjamin caught the game-winning touchdown in Florida State’s victory over Auburn in the national championship game. It capped a breakout year in which the 6-foot-5, 240-pounder caught 54 passes for 1,011 yards and a team-high 15 touchdowns.

Benjamin isn’t a speed receiver like Lee or Beckham — he only ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds at the Combine — but he possesses incredible arm length (34 7/8 inches) and has the potential to be a nightmare in the red zone.
