One person dead, now identified, another injured as semi crashes into Kansas Turnpike tollbooth
A semi tractor-trailer crashed into an unmanned tollbooth on the Kansas Turnpike near Tonganoxie early Saturday, killing one person who was riding in the truck.
A second person in the tractor-trailer was critically injured when the truck ran into the tollbooth on westbound Interstate 70 in Leavenworth County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the 2004 Volvo tractor was traveling at highway speeds and didn’t slow down before crashing into the tollbooth. The truck’s engine landed about 50 yards from the booth. Sergiy Angelchev, 30, of Aurora, Colo., was ejected and declared dead at the scene. A passenger, Roman Ilyaich, 25, also of Aurora, was critically injured. Authorities said neither was wearing a seat belt.
The patrol says no one was in the booth, which is unmanned at night.
