Belton woman gets 16-year term in husband’s death
A Cass County judge on Friday sentenced a Belton woman to 16 years in prison for shooting her husband in the mouth while he sat in a living room chair.
Cynthia Walters, 63, was found guilty in January of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Her husband, Robert Walters, died Sept. 6, 2010, at the couple’s home in the 1500 block of East 187th Street.
The woman called 911 after the shooting and told police when they arrived that her husband was controlling and had called her stupid. She said she got a gun and pointed it at him to make him mad. She said she didn’t know it was loaded.
Walters’ daughter told police she thought her mother “just lost it” and shot the victim intentionally.
