Robbers point guns at family, steal electronics in KC home invasion

Kansas City police are looking for four robbers who barged into a house and held a family at gunpoint on their first night in a new home.

The robbers pointed guns at the heads of a man, his wife and their two sons, ages 17 and 12, while a 7-week-old baby lay on a sofa in the holdup at 9:45 p.m. Saturday in the 8600 block of East 110th Street in Ruskin Hills. Two other children, ages 5 and 6, were asleep in back bedrooms.

As the robbers ran out of the house, one of them fired a bullet at the 32-year-old father, but no one was hurt. The bullet hit a wall near the father’s head.

The family had spent all day Saturday moving boxes into the home. The father went to get pizza and noticed four suspicious males near his home when he returned. Worried about their motives, he left the pizzas in his car and tried to dart into his home.

But the four males, who appeared to be teenagers, ran up to him before he could open the door, according to police reports.

One robber dropped a backpack, pulled a shotgun and told the man to lie on the ground. The robber rifled through the victim’s pockets, taking his keys, wallet and debit card. The robber then asked who was in the house. Just children were inside, the man responded.

The robbers, who all had guns, followed the man inside and ordered him and his sons to the floor. The robbers looked for valuables, but most of the family’s belongings remained in boxes. The robbers grabbed what had been unpacked, including a video game console, a flat-screen television and Beats Audio headphones.

During the holdup, the man’s 25-year-old wife returned home with her vehicle loaded with belongings. One intruder forced her to the floor before all the robbers fled in the man’s and woman’s vehicles.

The family went to a neighbor’s house for help. Officers found some of their belongings in their driveway, including the television.

Less than 20 minutes later, police found the vehicles abandoned about a mile away, near 107th Street and Oakland Avenue.

The family plans to stay in the home, despite the disquieting start, the wife told The Star.
