Talks on zoo safety to continue

A meeting Thursday to discuss ways to forestall violence at the Kansas City Zoo, such as the incident with gunfire that marred a free-admission day on Tuesday, was productive but inconclusive, according to a participant.

Pam Mason, chairwoman of the Zoological Tax District Commission, said the discussion in Mayor Sly James’ office lasted a little more than an hour. She said more meetings are planned and something may be announced in about a month.

Mason said there was general consensus that Clay and Jackson county residents should continue to enjoy free days at the zoo, but the way that is structured could be more flexible.

Warm temperatures helped boost attendance at the zoo to about 17,000 on Thursday.
