Man dead in crash after a chase involving gunfire in Kansas City

A car chase involving gunfire from at least one vehicle ended with an SUV flipped over and its driver dead Thursday afternoon in Kansas City.

The gray SUV crashed near 13th Street and Virginia Avenue about 3:15 p.m. Thursday. Police at the scene said the first report came from 13th Street and Lydia Avenue. They found a trail of shell casings leading from 13th Street and Troost Avenue to an area a few blocks east of where the SUV crashed.

Based on the casings and eyewitness accounts, police think the gun was an assault weapon. It was not clear if the shots came from one or both vehicles.

A police spokeswoman said it was also not immediately clear whether the driver of the SUV died from a gunshot wound or the crash. He was the only occupant of the vehicle, which struck a fence and landed on its roof. He died at the scene.

The second vehicle was last seen southbound from 13th and Virginia. It was thought to have had two or three occupants. Police planned to check video from businesses in the area to try to identify the vehicle.
