Kansas City man gets 30 years for killing well-known community advocate

A Kansas City man was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for the 2010 killing of a 67-year-old woman.

Fannie Delia Young was a well-known community advocate who created tutoring programs and summer camp opportunities for youths. She was found beaten and stabbed inside her apartment in the 1200 block of Michigan Avenue on Nov. 1, 2010.

Rashod L. James was arrested after leading police on a chase while he was driving Young’s stolen car. He was linked by DNA testing to evidence inside her apartment.

James, 23, pleaded guilty in January in Jackson County Circuit Court to charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Thursday’s sentence was ordered to run consecutively to a 10-year federal prison sentence James is serving for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
