Authorities identify two people killed in K-10 crossover crash near De Soto

An early morning crossover crash killed two people Thursday along Kansas 10 in Johnson County near De Soto.

Authorities identified the victims as Johnnie Royce Jackson, 45, of Kansas City, and Robert Anthony Zevenbergen, 20, of Kansas City, Kan.

The crash occurred when the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Jackson, while westbound on K-10, crossed the grassy median and struck the 2013 Toyota Avalon driven by Zevenbergen at 1:10 a.m., according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Authorities pronounced both drivers dead at the scene.

Jackson was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from his vehicle, said Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Howard Dickinson. Zevenbergen had been wearing a seat belt, he said.

The accident’s cause remains under investigation.

Cable median barriers were not in place at the site of the accident, said Dickinson.

Such barriers have been installed along K-10 in two places: near Eudora in Douglas County and near the Kansas 7 interchange in Johnson County, Dickinson said.

That project, announced in 2012, was to place such barriers along 4.3 miles of K-10.

Eastbound K-10 was shut down for several hours while the patrol investigated the crash and crews cleared the wreckage.
