Bond reduction is denied for KCK homicide suspect

Revenge for a sister’s death may have been the motive for murder in Kansas City, Kan., a prosecutor said Tuesday during a bond reduction hearing.

Joshua Hare, 20, who is charged with second-degree murder in the Feb. 25 shooting death of Chad Coen, was seeking a reduction of his $1 million bond.

Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Tatum opposed the reduction in the murder case, as well as a separate attempted robbery case against Hare.

Tatum said the victim in the robbery, which occurred just a few hours before Coen, 26, was killed, suffered “major injuries.” She said that assault was precipitated by an argument about the death of Hare’s sister.

Someone killed Latisha Hare, 22, on Feb. 3.

Tatum said it appeared that Hare thought Coen was “somehow involved in the murder of his sister.”

After hearing from Tatum and defense attorney Jeff Leiker, Wyandotte County District Judge Bill Klapper denied the bond reduction request.

A preliminary hearing is set for May 16.
