Man is accused of stabbing his father at the Overland Park Arboretum

Authorities accused a 20-year-old man Friday of attempting to stab his father to death at the Overland Park Arboretum on Thursday.

Johnson County prosecutors charged Maxwell M. Holcomb with attempted first-degree murder. Robert Holcomb, a doctor who specializes in neonatal medicine, suffered several stab wounds and remained hospitalized Friday. Police said his condition was stable.

Overland Park police said the incident occurred about 12:20 p.m. Thursday at the city-owned park in the 8900 block of West 179th Street. Maxwell Holcomb ran from the area after the incident but was arrested a short time later near 194th and Flint streets.

Holcomb appeared in court on the charge Friday afternoon. A judge set his bond at $500,000 and ordered that he have no contact with the victim.

A statement from Robert Holcomb and his family was released Friday through Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

“Our family has been overwhelmed with the many thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” it said. “While I continue to improve, I am deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support for me and my family.”

The family thanked police and other first responders and asked for privacy “during this very difficult time for our family.”
