Man dies after suspected drunken driver runs red light, KC police say

Duane E. Shelton, 45, of Kansas City, died late Monday after another driver ran a red light and caused a collision at 27th Street and Benton Boulevard, police said.

Shelton was driving north on Benton about 11:30 p.m. when he approached the stoplight, which for him was flashing yellow. The other driver was westbound on 27th with a flashing red signal, police said.

The other driver, age 29, crashed into the driver’s side of Shelton’s vehicle, killing him. Five occupants of the other vehicle were taken to hospitals for minor injuries.

Police said alcohol appears to be a factor in the wreck.
