Firefighter injured battling Kansas City, Kan., house fire

A Kansas City, Kan., firefighter suffered a back injury after falling on stairs while battling an early morning house fire Friday.

The firefighter was taken to the hospital and was treated and released.

The firefighter was battling a fire at a house in the 5900 block of Metropolitan Avenue.

The fire was reported about 2:15 a.m. and crews arriving on the scene reported seeing flames coming from the one-story wood-framed house.

Crews forced their way into the house, which had been boarded up. The house, however, had furniture throughout inside.

After conducting searches, officials determined that no one was in the house.

The fire started in the living room area and spread into the attic and other rooms. Fire crews had to ventilate the roof to get to heavy fire in the attic.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. It caused $60,000 in damages.
