Adult trial sought for teen charged with killing his father in Shawnee

Johnson County prosecutors are seeking to have a Bonner Springs teenager tried as an adult in the killing of his father last July in Shawnee.

Dalton Gay, who turned 15 in September, is charged in the juvenile division of Johnson County District Court with first-degree murder in the July 2 shooting death of Darren E. Gay.

Darren Gay, 46, of Kansas City, Kan., was killed outside a Shawnee auction business near 47th Street and Frisbie Road.

Police said the boy’s mother and stepfather had taken the boy to the location for an arranged custody exchange shortly before the shooting. Dalton Gay was arrested at the scene and has remained in juvenile detention since then.

The motion seeking to try Dalton Gay as an adult was filed Monday by Assistant District Attorney Don Hymer. A hearing on the motion was scheduled for June 9 and 10.
