Kansas man charged with murder in death of fetus

The Kansas attorney general has filed a first-degree murder charge against a 30-year-old western Kansas man accused of killing an 8- to 10-week-old fetus by serving the mother a pancake laced with medication intended to end a pregnancy.

Scott Robert Bollig of WaKeeney is charged with first-degree murder.

The criminal complaint filed in Trego County by Attorney General Derek Schmidt accuses Bollig of putting the crushed medication on a pancake for the pregnant woman to eat.

The complaint also includes an alternative charge of attempted murder, as well as one count each of aggravated battery and distribution of adulterated food. The woman also suffered “great bodily harm,” according to the complaint.

Bollig’s lawyer said he intends to challenge the law used to charge Bollig. The statute, known as Alexa’s Law, gives prosecutors the authority to charge someone with murder, manslaughter or battery for intentionally harming a fetus.
