Goose poop is getting the blame for fish kill in Loose Park lake

Dead fish floating in the lake at Loose Park may have been victims, indirectly, of the Canada geese that frequent the park.

Kansas City Parks Superintendent Forest Decker said Monday the water would be tested, but he suspected that the decay of goose poop in the lake may have depleted oxygen the fish needed while the surface was frozen over. Now the carcasses are floating up.

The parks department is thinking about hiring Geese Police of Kansas City to deploy border collies to intimidate and ward the geese away from Loose Park this summer.

A trial program worked well last year at Mill Creek and Theis parks, Decker said.
