Leonard Jones Jr. is the sole candidate for Grandview mayor

Leonard Jones Jr., who has been serving as Grandview’s mayor in the wake of Stephen Dennis’ departure, is virtually assured of remaining in the post another year.

When the filing deadline passed Wednesday, Jones was the only person seeking the job in the April 8 election. He will serve out Dennis’ term, which expires in April 2015.

Dennis resigned suddenly Jan. 9. On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to wire fraud in federal court, admitting that he defrauded $35,000 from a prayer ministry by misrepresenting that his nonprofit company, Matters of the Heart, was a tax-exempt charity.

Dennis acknowledged transferring $34,000 of that donation to his personal bank account, even though it was intended to help the poor and elderly in Grandview.
