School champs advance to preliminary spelling bees in Jackson County
Champion spellers from more than 70 schools earned the right to compete in preliminary spelling bees leading to the championship Jackson County Spelling Bee.
The championship, held Feb. 22 at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library, will determine who advances to the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.
The Jackson County bee is organized by the Kansas City and Mid-Continent library systems, the Local Investment Commission and the Kansas City Chapter of the American Federation of Teachers.
Spellers reaching the two preliminary bees are in grades one through eight are:
