Candidate forums for KC school board

Several community groups are hosting candidate forums before the April 8 school board election in the Kansas City Public Schools, where there are contested races for four seats. Two are at-large positions.

Future times and dates:

• Thursday, Feb. 13:

Kansas City Federation of Teachers School-Related Personnel, 7 p.m. at 3901 Main St., Suite 201.

• Saturday, Feb. 15:

MORE2/Regional Equity Network, 10 a.m. at Swope Parkway United Christian Church, 6140 Swope Parkway.

• Tuesday, Feb. 18:

NAACP of Kansas City, 6:30 p.m. at Brush Creek Community Center, 3801 Brush Creek Blvd.

• Monday, Feb. 24:

District Advisory Committee, 6 p.m. at Manual Career and Technical Center, 1215 E. Truman Road.

• Thursday, March 6:

Greater Kansas City Women’s Political Caucus, 6 p.m. at All Souls Church, 4501 Walnut St.

• Tuesday, March 18:

Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, at 7 p.m. at the Central Presbyterian Church at 3501 Campbell.

• Monday, March 31:

Communities Creating Opportunities, 7 p.m. at Visitation Catholic Church, 5141 Main St.

Incumbents unopposedin Center district

The spring election season won’t change school board that governs the Center School District in south Kansas City.

Four seats are open, and only the four incubments filed for eleection: Joe Nastasi, Merrell Bennekin, Cathy Jolly and Dennis McCulloch.

McCulloch’s is a one-year term; the others will serve for three years.

Kids First Town Hall now Feb. 27

A Kids First Town Hall Meeting, postponed from last week by bad weather, will now be at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 at Longview Historical Mansion, 1200 S.W. Longview Park Drive in Lee's Summit.

Area lawmakers have been invited to the event, hosted by the Missouri PTA and the Lee's Summit Council of PTAs.

State PTA officials will ask questions related to the group’s top priorities for local control of schools, funding for early childhood education, increased parental engagement and tax credits for tuition to parents of nonpublic school children.
