Icy roadways cause a spate of area accidents

Glazed roads caused havoc on area roads Friday and round two overnight was expected to add another one- or two-tenths of an inch of ice.

Slick roads caused several multi-vehicle accidents and rollovers Friday afternoon and evening, particularly on the south side of the metro area.

One person was killed in an accident about 8:30 p.m. on northbound Interstate 35 between Gardner and Olathe.

An Overland Park police officer was injured while working an accident on westbound Interstate 435 near Metcalf Avenue when another vehicle struck his patrol car from behind. His injuries were considered non-life-threatening.

A police officer at one accident scene asked for road crews to be “expedited” because “these bridges are just a sheet of ice.”

Missouri 150 between Interstate 49 and Holmes Road was shut down temporarily after multiple wrecks.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday.

Areas north of Kansas City, along and north of Missouri 36, could tally 3 to 5 inches of snow by midday, according to the National Weather Service.

The high Saturday is expected to be in the 20s, but wind chills could dip below zero overnight and into Sunday, which has a forecast of mostly sunny.

Temperatures could inch above freezing Monday, but a chance of snow returns Monday night and Tuesday.
