Man pleads guilty in murder of Delia Young

A 22-year-old Kansas City man pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree murder in the death of well-known community advocate Delia C. Young in 2010.

Rashod L. James, whose address was just a few blocks from Young’s near 12th Street and Michigan Avenue, will be sentenced March 20 for murder and armed criminal action. He could get up to 40 years.

Young was found dead in her home. Court records said James was matched to a DNA profile from tape that was used on her head.

Young, 67, started a tutoring program to encourage minority high school students to pursue careers in medicine. In 1981 she organized local summer camps for children from Atlanta who had been terrorized by a child killer there.
