Mayonnaise is most-consumed condiment, report says

If you thought ketchup was the clear frontrunner for most-consumed condiment in the U.S., you were wrong.

The news website Quartz reports that market research company Euromonitor says Americans consume about $2 billion worth of mayonnaise a year, far more than any other condiment on the list.

Americans love their sandwiches.

Ketchup came in a not-so-close second, with around $800 million worth consumed per year. Then comes soy sauce, with $725 million, and barbecue sauce in fourth place with $660 million, according to

.

Mustard-lovers came in last, with under $450 million.

Wait. Where's the salsa? Euromonitor responds that salsa is, technically speaking, a “dip”, not a condiment. (For what it’s worth, salsa would eclipse ketchup, but still be second to mayo.)

So what do you think, did ketchup get shafted?

Should the data be reconsidered for Kansas City, where barbecue sauce might reign supreme?
