Oreo to unveil two new flavors: Cookie Dough and Marshmallow Crispy
Oreo will introduce two new, limited-edition flavors next month – Cookie Dough and Marshmallow Crispy – and early reviews are this: The dunkin’ could be better.
We weren’t lucky enough to get our hands on samples today, so we’ll defer to the lucky few who have, apparently every other media and entertainment outlet on the planet, including Esquire magazine, E! News, the New York Daily News and the A.V. Club website. (We feel so unloved.)
But here’s a heads-up: Though the cookies won’t hit stores until Feb. 3, they’ve reportedly popped up at some Dollar General stores, where food bloggers have already gotten their hands on them.
The new Oreo Cookie Dough has a chocolate-flavored cookie with a dough-flavored filling, tan in color with “chocolately chips.”
The Marshmallow Crispy seems inspired by that another familiar treat, a Rice Krispies treat. The cookie part is vanilla-flavored, the sweet cream middle is dotted with crisped rice.
Last year, Nabisco created two other newsworthy Oreos – Watermelon and Candy Corn.
During the Grammy Awards on Sunday, indie rockers Tegan Sara will appear in a commercial that will reveal a one-time-only hashtag for “fans with the fastest thumbs” to tweet and get some of the new cookies before they hit the shelves.
But first, here are a few of the early reviews of the Marshmallow Crispy Oreo, which the Daily News reported had ardent followers among its taste-testers:
“Chemical death.”
“Too sweet to eat.”
“The marshmallow crisp ones have a strange cinnamon-sugar kick to them that I was not expecting, and doesn’t taste anything like a rice krispie treat to me.”
“Kind of tastes like Lucky Charms. Way too sweet for me. I need chocolate in my Oreo."
"Rice Krispie treat that was eaten by a cow, milked out, frozen and packaged as astronaut food."
“I kind of dig the texture, but holy s**t are these sweet.”
On the Cookie Dough Oreo, which seems to be faring better in early reviews:
“Fake cookie dough is always a bit wonky, but the ‘chocolate’ Oreo cookies make the cookie dough filling taste even stranger.”
“This cookie dough Oreo is actually one of the better cookie-dough-flavored things out there.”
“Too rich for my blood. And this comes from someone who would eat an entire jar of Marshmallow Fluff.”
"Ironically tastes like the toasted marshmallow Jelly Bean."
"Tastes like a normal Oreo, which isn't a bad thing."
At Esquire, John Mariani, who writes the
, concluded that the two new cookies are “likeable” and “OK, in the way a variant of ‘Surfer Girl’ with strings might be, or a Porsche with fins.
“They’re awfully sweet, but then Oreos never skimped on the sugar content. They are certainly not an absurd marketing gaffe like New Coke or Pepsi Clear, and the limited release gives them a kind of cult status.
“But after eating a couple of the new flavors, I didn't feel like gorging on the rest of the package, as I and millions of fans do with uncontrolled abandon, with or without a glass or milk, on classic OREOS.”
