Call demanding money for outstanding warrant a scam, Johnson County sheriff warns

Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a telephone scam that demands money for outstanding warrants.

Authorities have received reports of scammers claiming to be sheriff deputies and attempting to get money, according to the sheriff’s office.

The scammers, who have used a badge and/or serial number, tell potential victims they have a warrant out for their arrest for failing to appear in court for a traffic camera citation.

The callers then tell potential victims to purchase a Green Dot Moneypak and send it to them.

The sheriff’s office said its procedure for contacting those with warrants doesn’t include a demand for an immediate bond payment.

Anyone who has been a victim of the scam is encouraged to call 911.
