Chiefs’ Derrick Johnson, Alex Smith going to Pro Bowl

Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith and linebacker Derrick Johnson were selected on Monday for next Sunday’s Pro Bowl, giving the club 10 players in the game.

Smith will replace New England quarterback Tom Brady, who pulled out of the game after Sunday’s loss to Denver in the AFC championship game.

Johnson will replace San Francisco’s NaVorro Bowman, who suffered a knee injury in the 49ers loss to Seattle in the NFC championship game.

The 2014 Pro Bowl will be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu at 6 p.m. Sunday and televised by NBC.

Johnson and Smith will join Chiefs offensive tackle Branden Albert, safety Eric Berry, running back Jamaal Charles, cornerback Brandon Flowers, defensive tackle Dontari Poe, punt returner Dexter McCluster and linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

The Chiefs’ 10 representatives are the most they’ve sent to a Pro Bowl, breaking the mark of 2003 when nine players participated in the game. The club sent 12 players to the 1962 and 1966 AFL All-Star Games.

It will be Johnson’s third straight Pro Bowl appearance. Johnson, who appeared to be a glaring omission when the Pro Bowl teams were announced last month, is coming off one of his most productive seasons. He led the Chiefs with 110 tackles, had 4.5 sacks and two interceptions.

Smith completed 308 of 509 passes for 3,313 yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions in his first season with the Chiefs. Smith, who was acquired in a trade with San Francisco, where played eight seasons, will be making his first Pro Bowl appearance.
