KC police ID driver killed in chain-reaction wreck on I-435
Thomas E. Collins, 57, of Harrisonville died early Wednesday in Kansas City after rear-ending a van that had slowed down because of a three-vehicle wreck on Interstate 435.
The three-vehicle wreck, which reportedly was caused by a speeding driver who hit two vehicles, blocked all southbound lanes of traffic near Bannister Road about 12:15 a.m.
As traffic slowed and stopped, Collins’ vehicle struck the back of a van then hit the concrete barrier on the west shoulder. He was not wearing his seat belt, police said.
A passenger in his car and occupants of the van suffered non life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Bill Mahoney.
