Home invasion shooting suspect charged in south KC case
A 19-year-old Kansas City man was charged Monday with breaking into his former girlfriend’s house and shooting her and a man.
The suspect, allegedly wounded when the victims shot back, was arrested later at a hospital. None of the shooting injuries were life-threatening, according to police.
Jackson County prosecutors charged Reggie J. Gant with first-degree domestic assault, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.
The wounded woman told police that she and the other victim were asleep early Sunday at a residence in the 11300 block of Herrick Avenue when they heard someone kicking in the front door. A man appeared in the bedroom doorway and did not say anything before he started shooting, the woman said.
She picked up a gun and started shooting back, then handed the gun to her male companion, who also fired shots, according to court documents. The woman’s 5-year-old daughter and 7-year-old niece were sleeping in another bedroom.
The woman said that after the gunfire she saw the intruder get up from the floor and run away.
