Chiefs sign four players to reserve-futures contracts

The Chiefs officially have added four more players to the roster, as they signed running back Joe McKnight, offensive tackle R.J. Dill, defensive end Brandon Moore and safety Jerron McMillian to reserve-futures contracts.

McKnight, 25, was a fourth-round pick of the New York Jets out of Southern California in 2010. In his three-year career with the Jets, he carried the ball 112 times for 502 yards and zero touchdowns and logged a Pro Football Focus offensive grade of 1.4. He did serve as a kick returner for the Jets in 2011 and 2012, returning one kick for a score each year. In fact, his 29-yard career kick return average still leads all active players, and he logged a PFF special teams grade of 6.8 during his time with the Jets.

McKnight, however, was unexpectedly cut in August after a turbulent summer that included a failed conditioning test, an arrest for unpaid traffic violations, various head injuries and some questionable posts on Twitter.

McMillian, 24, was taken in the fourth round of the 2012 Draft by the Green Bay Packers. McMillian, who attended Maine, proceeded to log 42 career tackles, six pass deflections and one interception in 28 games with the Packers, including two starts, before he was released in December.

According to Pro Football Focus, McMillian played 609 defensive snaps in 2012, finishing with a grade of 1.4. But through 12 games this year, he graded out at negative-10.5 in only 196 snaps.

Moore, 22, is an undrafted rookie from the University of Texas who is listed at 6 feet 5 and 317 pounds. He signed with the Chargers before training camp and spent the first 12 weeks of the season on the team's practice squad before he was released in November. He later signed with the Broncos before he was recently released.

“He's excited to be working with (Chiefs coach) Andy (Reid),” said Moore's agent, Tom Santanello. “It's a very stable, very good organization. He's gonna work hard from day one.”

Moore is a former four-star prospect who signed with Alabama out of high school and eventually transferred to East Mississippi Community College, which he helped win the Junior College National Championship in 2011. Moore eventually landed at Texas, where he played played in 12 games in 2012 and tallied 18 tackles, two sacks and eight tackles for a loss.

Dill, 23, is an undrafted free agent who spent time with the Patriots' and Jaguars' practice squads this season. Dill, who is listed at 6 feet 6 and 316 pounds, started 13 games at right tackle for Rutgers in 2012.

Future/reserve contracts begin when the new league year opens in March and don’t count against the current roster limit. They essentially allow teams to sign players for the upcoming season even though the new season has not begun yet. Only players who are not on an NFL team’s active roster at the conclusion of the regular season are eligible for these contracts.
