Kansas City fountain fund reaches $1 million

A campaign to repair and preserve Kansas City’s signature fountains has reached the $1 million mark.

More than 100 individuals, businesses and foundations have pledged or contributed money to the City of Fountains fundraising campaign, which began last June.

The Wish Upon A Fountain campaign was bolstered by a $500,000 year-end grant from the Hall Family Foundation to restore the waterfall feature at the Volker Fountain, near Volker Boulevard and Oak Street.

But more is needed, said City of Fountains board member Pat O’Neill.

The organization hopes to raise $2.5 million by mid-2014. The money is intended to fix eight fountains in need of major repairs and to preserve and maintain the rest of the 48 fountains in the city’s inventory.
