Railroad crane fire causes $700,000 damage

A fire on a crane loading semi-trailers onto railroad cars caused an estimated $700,000 in damage Wednesday morning in Kansas City, Kan.

Twenty-five firefighters worked for about 30 minutes to control the blaze that was reported shortly before 8:30 a.m. at a railroad yard at 720 S. 38th St.

The crane caught fire while loading trucks onto train cars. The crane operator was able to get out of the cab safely and Hazmat crews contained a fuel leak. The crane was worth about $1.2 million, according to the fire department. There were no injuries.
