FBI warns of phone scam where ‘special agent’ demands money

The FBI has warned Kansas City area residents of a phone scam during which the caller claims to be a special agent and demands payment for fines.

In some cases, the caller claims people have outstanding warrants, IRS fines or debt and gives instructions on how to make a payment, the FBI said.

The calls appear on Caller ID to be from the FBI Kansas City Division’s main number.

The FBI advised that its agents would not call people demanding payments of fines. It warned residents that the scam artists are trying to extort both personal and financial information.
