After taking a break for the World Cup, KC Water and field crews are set to resume work on the Westport Stormwater Improvement Project. Several roads will be closed as crews finish up the project.

Construction on the project is set to resume July 20, and with it comes two road closures, according to a news release from KC Water.

Starting July 20, A portion of Mill Street will be closed at Southwest Trafficway, KC Water said. On July 24, Westport Road will be closed between Mill Street and Bridger Road. The streets are set to reopen in the late fall.

Mill Street will remain open at Westport Road to allow access to “businesses and driveways,” KC Water said.

Officials estimate the project will be complete by the end of the year, the news release said.

“Remaining work includes further storm sewer improvements, streetscaping and final road resurfacing,” KC Water said.

The project is designed to “to reduce frequent flooding along Mill Street between Southwest Trafficway and Dr. Jeremiah Cameron Park,” KC Water said on its website.

The region is a historically flood-prone area in Westport, as Mill Street was built over Mill Creek.

While it won’t eradicate flooding, officials hope the project mitigates the frequent flooding in the district, according to KC Water.

Crews have already completed an underground storage facility in the parking lot of the Westport Sun Fresh, which will “add more than one million gallons of underground stormwater storage,” KC Water said.

Next, crews will work to complete stormwater inlet connections and activate the water storage system, KC Water said.
