Where can you see ‘The Odyssey’ near Kansas City in special IMAX formats?
The latest movie from Christopher Nolan isn’t your typical film, where you can walk into any theater and see the same movie wherever you are.
Released Friday, July 17, “The Odyssey” was the first of its kind, filmed with technology designed to translate to IMAX screens, star Matt Damon said an promotional video.
It was filmed on newly created IMAX film cameras, using 70 millimeter film. Previous IMAX technology used 65 millimeter film, which translates to 18k resolutions, much higher than typical high quality cameras, which can only go up to 4k, according to a video by the Wall Street Journal.
But that also means that few theaters are equipped to show the movie in the resolutions it was intended.
In the Kansas City area, there are only two places showing the film on 70 mm film and screen. Screenland Armour in North Kansas City and the AMC Studio in Olathe. Fewer than 30 movie theaters around the country are playing the movie in this format, according to USA Today.
The film is based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer that spans 24 books and tells about the 10-year journey of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, returning home after the Trojan War.
The film stars actors Matt Damon, known for his sci-fi works, “Interstellar,” “The Martian,” and more; Zendaya, from “Dune,” “Challengers” and “Euphoria”; Tom Holland, who plays Marvel’s Spider-Man; Anne Hathaway; Robert Pattinson; Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.
The new technology’s film frame has 15 perforations and runs horizontally through the projector, making it the largest format available, Damon said. Traditionally, film has four perforations and runs vertically through a projector.
The movie is also available for viewing in 35 mm film, creating a classic experience for viewers.
There are also select theaters with premium large format viewing experiences, in 4DX and DBox. 4DX adds motion and environmental effects with the seats moving in sync with the movie. The theater has wind, water, fog, scent, snow, lightning, and vibration effects to capture the feel of being inside the movie. DBox uses less environmental effects, but is immersive through motion and vibrations.
