Boy, 5, critically injured; struck by car in Independence
A 5-year-old boy is in critical condition Monday after being struck by a car in Independence.
Officers with the Independence Police Department were called to the intersection of West Truman Road and North River Boulevard at 5:40 p.m. Monday on reports of an injury crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, Sgt. Steven Boles, a spokesperson for the department, said in a news release.
A preliminary investigation revealed a 2022 Subaru Ascent was driving west on Truman Road when it struck a 5-year-old boy, Boles said.
According to the police department, video surveillance footage from the area showed the child walking on a sidewalk with a group of children when he “suddenly” darted into the road.
“Based on the investigation, the driver of the Subaru did not have an opportunity to avoid the collision,” the news release said.
The 5-year-old was transported to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition, Boles said. The driver of the Subaru remained at the scene and cooperated with officials.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, Boles said. Officers are working to gather information regarding the circumstances that may have led up to the crash, including who was supervising the children.
