Motorcycle driver dies after crash with semi-trailer on I-29 in Kansas City
A motorcycle driver was killed in a crash on a Kansas City highway after the bike collided with a semi truck, police said.
Officers responded around 4:11 p.m. Wednesday to Interstate 29 at Northwest 64th St for a reported crash.
Early investigation details indicate the crash happened as a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle sped southbound on Interstate 29.
The motorcycle weaved in and out of traffic and split lanes on the highway. At the same time, a white Freightliner semi truck pulling an unloaded flatbed trailer drove south on the highway.
According to a crash log, the motorcycle struck the back of the trailer, and the impact ejected the motorcycle driver off the bike.
After the crash, the motorcycle caught fire and was engulfed in flames, police said.
The motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi truck driver was not injured in the crash.
Police have not yet publicly identified the person who died.
All lanes of southbound I-29 were closed at NW 64th St. for about 3 hours while crews worked to clear the scene. The highway has since been reopened.
The crash marks Kansas City’s 40th traffic death this year, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman. At this time last year, the city had recorded 42 traffic deaths.
