Moldy beef, fruit flies: Latest Kansas City-area restaurant inspections
From winged insects floating in a bottle to employees handling food without gloves, health inspectors in Missouri and Kansas found numerous violations at Kansas City-area restaurants last week.
Dining establishments like sit-down restaurants, drive-thrus, gas stations and grocery stores are required to get food inspections, and governments have to release those inspections to the public.
In Kansas City and Independence, each city’s health department enforces the food code while in Kansas, the state’s Department of Agriculture handles inspections. The lower the number of violations, the better.
Most restaurants correct violations at the time of the original inspection or shortly after. The full inspections show how each establishment has corrected or is working to correct any remaining violations. Here are the restaurants in Kansas City and Johnson and Wyandotte counties that received seven or more critical or priority and priority foundation violations from June 21 though June 28.
The Juke House
- 1700 E. 18th St.
- 11 critical violations found June 25
Multiple instances of grease buildups were found on the main cook line at the jazz venue and restaurant, including on the floor, a wall, the grill and more. An employee was seen doing food preparations tasks without a hair restraint. Two stalls in the women’s restroom didn’t have covered trash cans.
A July 1 follow-up inspection found zero critical violations.
Strouds Oakridge
- 5410 NE Oak Ridge Drive
- 8 critical violations found June 26
Fruit flies were seen inside the bakery storage room. Boxes of food were stored on the floor at the salad prep area and main expo line. A three-compartment sink showed signs of leaks . Dust was found on two fans on the clean dish shelves, though this was corrected on site.
A follow-up inspection on July 1 found zero critical violations.
Little Caesars
- 8925 W. 95th St., Overland Park
- Two priority violations and five priority foundation violations found June 23
A food temperature measuring device was not present during the inspection. Plastic lids with sticky residue were stored as clean. The lids were sent to the dishes to be rewashed. The full report can be found on the Kansas inspection lookup.
Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Course
- 12501 Quivira Road, Overland Park
- Eight priority violations, one priority foundation violations found June 23
Winged insects were floating in a bottle of pre-made spirits at the bar. In the walk-in cooler, a container had molded beef and lemon. A bag of cooked beef was open with a date. All the items were discarded.
An employee was seen applying mayo to a bun with his bare hands. Spinach dip, sweet cream and cream cheese had dates on them that were past due and should have been discarded. They were removed after.

The Bean Coffee & Cafe
- 112 S. Main St., Spring Hill
- Two priority violations, four priority foundation violations found June 22
No hot water was at the front sink, nor was there paper towels available. Multiple bottled coffee drinks did not have the contents listed on the label. In the second bathroom, there was an accumulation of used toilet paper overflowing from the trash and onto the floor.

Which Kansas City businesses got suspended?
One Kansas City business was suspended due to a three-compartment sink backup.
Rooftop Cinema Club, 2101 Broadway Blvd., was suspended following a June 25 inspection. According to the inspection report, multiple backups were found during a three compartment sink test, and there were leaks throughout the plumbing system beneath the 3-compatment sink.
