Johnson County duplex fire displaces 2 children and 2 adults

A fire Monday at a duplex in Merriam displaced two children and two adults, fire officials said.

The fire began just before 7 p.m. at a townhome in Merriam’s 53rd and Farley area, west of Interstate 35, according to a media release shared by Jason Rhodes, Overland Park Fire Department spokesperson.

Firefighters saw “heavy smoke” pouring from the attic of the Johnson County two-unit building, Rhodes wrote. The residents, two adults and two children, were away from the house, according to the release.

Firefighters took 30 minutes to contain the flames, which caused moderate smoke damage to the whole building.

The residents of the adjoining unit were not displaced, according to the release. Merriam Police and Johnson County MED-ACT assisted in the response.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
