A man serving a sentence at the Kansas state prison in Lansing died at the facility after he was found unresponsive in his cell Sunday, officials said.

The Kansas Department of Corrections identified the man who died as George Eugene Phillips, 39.

In a news release, the department said Phillips was found unresponsive in his cell and said medical personnel attempted life-saving measures but could not revive the man. An independent autopsy will be conducted to determine the man’s cause of death, KDOC said.

The death will be investigated by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Phillips was serving a 48-year sentence for convictions on aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery and criminal threat charges in Sedgwick County, Kansas, officials said.
