A Kansas City, Kansas, police officer fatally shot a man in a home after he approached police with a knife during a confrontation Wednesday afternoon, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said.

Kansas City, Kansas, police were brought to a home in the 3200 block of North 84th Place shortly after 4 p.m. after they received a 911 call about a family disturbance, the KBI said in a news release. The caller reported that a family member was threatening them.

Police arrived and found that the caller had been attacked and had minor injuries. Officers attempted to place a man under arrest, but he fled to an upstairs area, and then emerged from a room armed with a knife, the KBI said. The man advanced toward police, and one officer shot the man, the KBI said.

The man, who was identified as Bruce Charles Thomas, 24, of Kansas City, Kansas, died at the scene.

The KBI will investigate the shooting and present findings to Wyandotte County prosecutors for review.
