One person is dead Monday following a fatal crash outside a south Kansas City school.

Emergency personnel responded to the crash at East 34th Street and The Paseo at 3:18 p.m., according to a news release from Kansas City Police Department spokesperson Officer Alayna Gonzalez.

A preliminary investigation revealed a “red Toyota SUV was traveling south on The Paseo from Linwood Boulevard at a high rate of speed when it struck a parked school bus that was stopped in front of a school,” Gonzalez said.

The driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene, Gonzalez said. The driver of the bus sustained minor injuries.

Investigators believe the driver of the Toyota was suffering from a medical emergency at the time of crash, Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said a summary of the incident did not indicate that any occupants, other than the driver, were on the bus at the time of the crash.
