Before dying, man said he was shot in KC by unknown attacker. Now a suspect is charged
A Kansas City man is facing a murder charge in connection with a fatal shooting in northeast Kansas City earlier this month, the Jackson County prosecutor announced today.
Sergio Isaac Insunza Sanchez faces counts of second degree murder and armed criminal action.
On June 9, Kansas City police responded to a reported shooting near Independence and Monroe avenues and found a victim in an alleyway with a gunshot wound, according to court records.
The victim, 53-year-old Mark Simmons, said he was approached by an unknown man while he was sitting inside the fenced area of a houseless camp, according to court records.
Simmons died from his injuries on June 18.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage, which showed a white SUV entering the alleyway. A single gunshot was heard over the audio before the footage showed the SUV exiting the alleyway.
Detectives linked Insunza Sanchez to the shooting using license plate readers, surveillance video and Instagram posts.
Insunza Sanchez’s bond is set at $200,000 cash only.
