Kansas City man faces murder charges in 2025 shooting that left 2 dead
A Kansas City man is facing two second-degree murder charges in connection to a fatal shooting in south Kansas City last year, the Jackson County prosecutor announced Wednesday.
Kevion Westmoreland has also been charged with first-degree robbery and three counts of armed criminal action, according to the county prosecutor’s announcement.
On Jan. 2, 2025, Kansas City police responded to a shooting in a shopping center parking lot near East 87th Street and Blue Ridge Boulevard. The police found two deceased victims, Samuel Hughes and Jeffery Hughes, with gunshot wounds when they arrived at the scene, according to court documents.
According to the prosecutor’s release, detectives used witness reports, cellphone data and surveillance footage to determine the victims had met Westmoreland and a co-conspirator to buy a firearm. It also stated that after one of the victims exited a vehicle, one of the co-conspirators robbed him and Westmoreland shot the two men.
A Jackson County judge set his bond at $500,000 cash only.
