A mass shooting that injured nine people, a double homicide inside a Westport convenience store and fights involving teenagers at a popular Lee’s Summit street festival were just some of the incidents that occurred over a violent weekend in the Kansas City metro.
Kansas City police are investigating two separate shootings that left two people dead and nine others injured between early Saturday morning and late Saturday night, while Lee’s Summit police responded to a series of fights during the city’s annual Downtown Days festival.
A mass shooting Saturday in the 7900 block of Troost Avenue at roughly 4 a.m. left nine people injured by gunfire.
Kansas City police officers responded to a call reporting the sound of gunfire and arrived to find a large crowd leaving the area. Three women suffering from gunshot wounds were located at the scene and transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police spokesperson Officer Alayna Gonzalez.
Police later learned that six additional shooting victims had arrived at area hospitals in private vehicles. All nine victims were adults and none of their injuries were considered life-threatening, according to police.
Authorities have not released details on what led to the shooting as of Monday morning. No arrests have been made and police continued their investigation.
Less than 20 hours later, police responded to a shooting inside a QuikTrip convenience store that left two dead in the 1200 block of Westport Road.
Officers were dispatched to the store around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and found two men suffering from gunshot wounds inside the business, according to the Police Department.
One victim, later identified as 24-year-old Rickey Cal, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, 18-year-old Jeron Jackson, was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died Sunday morning, according to police.
Police have not released information about a suspect in the shooting.
In Lee’s Summit, police spent nearly two hours breaking up a series of incidents and disturbances involving teenagers at the city’s Downtown Days festival Saturday night.
According to police, the incidents began around 7:40 p.m. and continued for roughly 90 minutes as officers responded to multiple fights near the festival grounds.
Two teenagers were detained during the evening and later released to their guardians. Police said during a Sunday press conference that charges could be filed at a later date.
Authorities said one detained teen allegedly discharged bear spray during the incident, and another juvenile who fled from officers was later found to be carrying an unregistered, 3D-printed “ghost gun,” according to police.
Videos taken at the event appear to show officers pinning youth down, with one young person placed in handcuffs and young people milling around the carnival area of the annual festival.
No injuries were reported.
Lee’s Summit police spokesperson Kelly Johnson said Sunday officers had prepared for the annual event with approximately 20 officers, security personnel, drones and a camera trailer. The Police Department also requested assistance from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office as officers moved between multiple incidents.
Festival organizers noted that this is the third consecutive year Downtown Days has experienced disruptions involving groups of teenagers. In 2025 and 2024, cries of “gun” caused panic in the crowd.
As of Monday morning, Lee’s Summit police said there were no updates.
All three incidents from across the metro remain under investigation.
