One person is dead Friday after they were run over by a car left in reverse at an east Kansas City residence.

Officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to the 2300 block of Cleveland Avenue just before 1 a.m. Friday on reports of a fatality crash in which a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle, Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the department, said in a news release Friday.

A preliminary investigation revealed that someone parked and exited a black Buick Enclave at a residence in the area, Gonzalez said. The vehicle was left in reverse, and it rolled backward, striking and killing the driver.

The vehicle also struck an unoccupied gray Ford Ranger before coming to a stop, the news release said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The death marks the 34th traffic fatality in Kansas City in 2026, compared to 27 at this time last year, Gonzalez said. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
