KCUR, the Kansas City public radio station, has a new home.

The National Public Radio affiliate and the University of Missouri-Kansas City announced on Tuesday that staff and broadcast operations for KCUR and Classical KC, the classical music station, would move to office space in the Country Club Plaza under a two-year lease starting June 15.

The offices will be in the Park Plaza office building near the intersection of West 47th Street and Summit Street, near the Unity Temple.

KCUR had been housed at 4825 Troost Ave., in an aging building owned by UMKC, for 40 years. Staff members were sent scrambling in December and January after UMKC said KCUR and Classical KC would have to move out, citing building safety concerns.

“Today’s signing of the lease marks a necessary and positive step toward KCUR’s bright future,” KCUR general manager Sarah Morris said in an announcement of the lease.

“I can’t emphasize enough the myriad ways KCUR employees have shown patience, flexibility, creativity and resilience over these past several months of challenges. We are all eager to establish our new home on the Plaza and continue to serve the people of Kansas City.”

“Although the building closure presented challenges, we’re excited to be past that and to confirm that KCUR will be in a new location that is an upgrade for staff and offers convenient access to everything in the Kansas City metro,” UMKC vice chancellor for finance and administration Troy Bruun said in the announcement.

“We thank KCUR employees for their patience and appreciate the strong outpouring of support from the community as radio station staff have dealt with this unexpected transition to a new facility.”
