A single-vehicle crash on U.S. 71 Highway in Kansas City left one person hospitalized with critical injuries, police said.

Officers responded just before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the area of southbound 71 Highway and Longview Road on a reported crash.

According to a preliminary investigation, the crash happened as a red GMC Sierra pickup truck drove south on 71 Highway, just north of Longview Road.

For an unknown reason, the truck ran off the road to the right and struck a guardrail several times before rolling over. It then slid on the highway before coming to a rest, according to a crash log.

The driver and sole occupant of the truck was critically injured in the crash. Paramedics transported the driver to a hospital.

As of Thursday, the driver was still in critical condition, police said.

At the time of the crash, four lanes of the highway were closed to traffic for around two and a half hours. The highway has since reopened.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
